Dishing on sex and Lush product review

February 3, 2010

Have you wanted to see what I look like in real life and hear my voice? Well, now's your chance! I was thrilled to have been featured as a guest on a local cable show, The District Dish. Check out my interview:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwzTm0GOiWs]

I know what you're thinking:

Nice pixels! (I get that all the time.) Seriously, though, I had a blast taping with the hosts and hope you enjoyed it!

As Valentine's Day approaches, it seemed like a good time to review Lush's Soft Coeur Massage Bar.*

Back in college, my roommate, Emma, and I had a saying:

It all starts with a back rub.

What is "it?" Well, sex, of course! See, at that stage, there wasn't a lot of originality demonstrated or expected in the bedroom. Foreplay typically included Peter Gabriel on the stereo and very little, if any, clitoral stimulation. And, offers to give a back rub were made frequently with an understanding that a massage would lead to a whole lot more. Back rubs and sex went together like frat boys and kegs.

Now, when I ask for my man to give me a massage, it's because my back aches! Back rubs have thus become more about therapeutic body work than sex for me. Could a massage still lead to sex? Sure. But, that's no longer the goal.

Following an uncomfortable ride on Amtrak in January 2010, I asked my man to rub my back with Lush's Massage Bar, Soft Coeur. Soft Coeur is a play on words since in French, "coeur" is heart, and the bar is heart-shaped. The bar fits in the palm of your hand, and is slightly weighted like a bar of soap, yet soft to the touch. The bar is a combination of butters and oils and isn't a separate massage tool; the bar itself is the lotion!

The instructions recommend splitting the heart into two pieces, but I think the bar works better if you keep it whole. (The larger, seasonal massage bar can easily be broken into smaller pieces, but the heart is too small for that.) I'm not the best at giving massages so I liked that I could use the sides of the heart for leverage.

As I rubbed the bar over my man, the aromatic combination of Cocoa Butter, Honey and Sweet Orange Oil filled the bedroom. The scents were slightly sweet, but not so sweet that my man felt emasculated. Soft Coeur also contains Shea Butter, and isn't greasy to the touch.

After you apply the bar to skin for a few minutes, you can then place it on the night stand and just continue rubbing the lotion into your partner's back with your hands. I gave my man a 15-minute massage and divided the time with and without the bar.

When it was my turn to be on the receiving end of the massage, I noticed how much I liked how the bar felt on my skin. And, afterward, I didn't need to apply lotion or perfume since the light, clean scent and softness lasted for several hours.

Although this product was designed for couples, my man had a great thought. He said:

I could see a girl using it by herself as a way to apply lotion without any grease or mess.

Baby, you are a smart one! (Lush, get on that rebranding!) Why bother with squeezing a bottle of lotion or worrying about oil dripping on the floor if you don't need to? Just grab some Soft Coeur or another one of Lush's massage bars and rub it into your skin as needed!

Tip: if you have a heater or candle in the room, don't keep the bar too close to the heat or flame, or it will melt. Lush sells a decorative tin in which you can keep the massage bars, but I found that my bars have stayed solid if I keep them in a cool, dry place.

Lush advises putting a towel down over your sheets or comforter before you massage your partner with Soft Coeur. We didn't heed the directions and didn't find any residue or discoloration on the sheets afterward. The box also indicates that the bar makes for a sensual – if rather – sticky massage. Sensual, I get. But, sticky? That wasn't our experience. Traditional lotion is much stickier, and oils are much greasier.

Soft Coeur is the second product from the True Romance box of goodies that I don't just like, but I love! I highly recommend buying this as your Valentine's Day present to yourself – whether or not you have a significant other! Lush's Soft Coeur will cover you with softness whether you are looking for a lotion, relief for sore muscles, or intimacy!

Oh, and in case you are wondering, yes, it all started with a back rub when we tried Soft Coeur and ended with sex. Did you expect anything less?

*In accordance with FTC Guidelines, I received the True Romance box of goodies from Lush free of charge in exchange for my honest assessment of the products contained within.

My PSA: Buy the Turbo 8

February 25, 2010

I'm trying to type, as my body is still trembling. I can barely focus on the screen, and my face is all flushed. I'm sitting in front of my laptop with my mouth agape.

"Why?" you might be wondering.

Well, folks, I think I just found my new favorite sex toy. (I'm going through my own version of shock and awe here.)

Over the years, I've used an array of sex toys either by myself or with a partner. But, since the first time I felt the Homedics Massager (similar to the Hitachi Magic Wand) on my clit, I relied on that as my "Go-To Toy." It has always delivered. But now, my Homedics Massager might start gathering dust in the bottom of my dresser drawer o' fun. For I have found...

The Turbo 8 Accelerator Bullet Vibrator!*

This is one of The Adult Toy Shoppe's best sellers, and I can totally see why. I'm not normally a fan of bullets, as I find them too weak in their vibrations. (I attribute that to the fact that most bullets take 1-2 AA batteries. The Turbo 8, by contrast, takes 4 AA batteries, which translates into a lot more power.)

The Turbo 8 has 8 different speeds of vibration. I came within 60 seconds on the highest speed, and in less than four minutes on the fourth speed. I'm not used to finding such power and pleasure in a toy that isn't much bigger than my thumb. (For those of you who like to know the dimensions of things, the toy is 2.5" long and 1" wide.)

The control panel that attaches to the bullet via a wire is very easy to operate. I just pressed to increase or decrease the vibrations. The panel has a small light inside so there's no need to sacrifice the mood to change the intensity of the bullet.

It's a plus that this toy has a longer wire between the control panel and the bullet itself. (With some bullets, I've felt as though I've had to contort my body to use the bullet or switch the speed since the wire was so short. The long wire of this toy is definitely helpful for added flexibility and control.) There is also extra plastic material to reinforce the spot on the toy where the wire connects to the bullet. I like that since the wires on most bullets aren't designed for the long haul!

The Turbo 8 offers extra versatility in that there is a silicone sleeve over the bullet. The sleeve is comfortable to the touch (soft without being too gel-like), and has ridges or grooves all the way around. The texture is like a bonus for your clit since the combination of the vibration with the ridged sleeve lends itself to great orgasms. The sleeve is removable so that the bullet can be used by itself. (I'm not sure why you would want to do that, though, except for cleaning purposes.)

The toy is designed for clitoral stimulation and isn't marketed for use internally. With that disclaimer, the toy might have slipped inside my pussy. (Really! It just slipped.) The intense speeds and textured sleeve can help you achieve a G-Spot orgasm, although the toy must be positioned carefully.

The Turbo 8 is very portable and perfect to pack in an overnight bag. I also think that the design (a silver bullet with a clear sleeve and a blue-grey control panel) is guy-friendly. I've broken out the Homedics Massager with most of my serious boyfriends, but a large toy with a plug might seem like a cock substitute. (It's not, of course, but there's no need to intimidate a guy.) The Turbo 8 is innocuous enough in its appearance for men, but powerful enough to satisfy women.

If this is your first time purchasing a sex toy, I recommend starting out on the lowest speed and working your way up. View the higher speeds as optional, not mandatory, and ease into the experience. If you have used vibrators in the past, I suggest starting at one of the middle speeds to see how much power you need to achieve an orgasm. (There are varying schools of thought as to whether regular use of vibrators temporarily desensitizes the nerves so just use as much power as you need to.) If you have been around the block with sex toys, start at the sixth, seventh or eight speed and marvel at how such a small toy can pack such a strong punch!

Powerful, portable, well-made, inexpensive ($23.99) and user-friendly -- this toy is a winner!

Ladies, trust me on this one: buy the Turbo 8! Men, pick this up for your significant other! Flowers die. Chocolate gets consumed. But, the Turbo Accelerator is a gift that will keep on giving...and giving...and giving!

(I managed to get this post in for TMI Thursday in the nick of time! It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it *wink*.)

The Triple Flex is a winner!

April 19, 2010

I'm still incensed about the use of toxic chemicals in sex toys. I've spoken with several friends over the past few days about the lack of government regulation over the adult toy industry and how the use of phthalates in sex toys would be banned if straight men were the primary consumers of these products. I'm continuing to think of what I can do to bring more attention to this matter.

When I arrived home from my lunch with Dr. Ruthie during which I learned about phthalates in sex toys, I went online to read more about the health implications. I then went to my bedroom to look at the toy that The Adult Toy Shoppe had just mailed to me.* I was happy to see in large colorful font on the package that the toy was PF (phthalate-free). I also felt comforted when I opened the plastic covering and didn't smell that disgusting odor that accompanies products containing harmful chemicals. Whew!

I selected this toy because it seemed to be a good substitute for The Rabbit. My rabbit has served me well on occasion, but I wanted something new and different. (For those of you who have yet to jump on the bunny bandwagon, The Rabbit provides clitoral and G-Spot stimulation in one powerful toy.)

Why wasn't The Rabbit my go-to toy? Well, I found that it wasn't strong enough for just clitoral stimulation alone. In addition, I felt like The Rabbit was too large of a toy to use during sex with a partner and wished there was the option for some anal stimulation.

Enter The Adult Toy Shoppe's Triple Flex Vibrator!

This toy satisfied all my needs -- pun intended!

1. Solo clit stimulation: For women who can only orgasm clitorally or are interested in just pleasing themselves externally, the Triple Flex can easily take care of that. There's one bullet or egg-shaped vibrator inside of the clitoral stimulator. You can place the side of the bullet right on your clitoris or if you prefer a gentler sensation, there's an extra inch of plastic sticking out from the top of the stimulator to tickle your clit. Either option is sensual and powerful. The toy is pliable enough that you can hold the side piece right on your clit and the rest of the toy will provide light vibrations on the outside of your pussy and depending on the angle, your perineum;

2. G-Spot stimulation: The main part of the vibrator is 5" long and 1.5" inches wide with a larger bullet vibrator inside of it. The vibrator has ridges around it at strategic places. You can put half of the vibrator inside of you and feel the top ridges on your G-Spot. Or, you can put the entire shaft inside of you and let the lower ridges rest on your G-Spot.

If the entire vibrator is inside you, it will be tough not to have the clitoral stimulator resting on your clit in some capacity. However, if you are using the toy to find your G-Spot for the first time and/or don't want to add clitoral stimulation, you can insert only half of the shaft. There is also an additional bullet at the base of the toy for extra vibrations;

3. Combo platter: The Triple Flex gets its name since the vibrator is flexible and has three connected pieces: one for your clit; one for your pussy; and an anal stimulator without a bullet. The anal stimulator is about the size of your pinky finger and thin with grooves to mimic anal beads. It's small enough for those of you who are new to anal play, and won't be overpowering since the anal stimulator does not contain its own bullet. The Triple Flex is so pliable that you can easily orgasm clitorally and/or vaginally without even placing the anal stimulator inside of your ass. But, for those of you who enjoy anal play, the stimulator will provide added pleasure.

The Triple Flex gives you options. Want to get off three ways at once? You can. Care to just orgasm clitorally? That's easy enough. Enjoy simultaneous clitoral and G-Spot stimulation? You've got it. This toy lives up to its name, but also doesn't require you to go for three times the pleasure unless you want to;

4. Easy to operate: G-Spot vibrators aren't always designed for ease of use. The Triple Flex, however, is. Rotate the bottom edge of the toy clockwise to turn it on (the more you turn, the higher the vibrations), and counter-clockwise to ease up on the vibrations and turn the toy off. It's as simple as operating an old clock radio, but far more fun. The toy also will stay in place if you care to change the intensity while you are using it; and

5. Price: The Triple Flex retails for $38.99. Great price for a well-made and powerful toy!

Is there anything that's a negative about The Triple Flex?

Well, it's not the quietest toy. It sounded like I had an miniature jack hammer in my bed. I definitely wouldn't use the toy if I needed to be discreet, although the noise didn't detract from the experience.

The Verdict:

Buh-bye Rabbit! I'm throwing your phthalate-containing tail out of here. There's a new Triple Flex Sheriff in town.

Sex Bomb Review

April 30, 2010

It's been a couple of months since I sampled one of the goodies from Lush's box of True Romance. What was left in the box for me to review?* Two bath bombs. Now, not every guy is a fan of taking baths, but I figured that JAG Man would be willing to help out a damsel in distress. On one particular weekday earlier this month, I knew he had a late dinner meeting. I figured that I could entice him with the following text:

Not sure what you're doing after work, but care to take a bath with your red-headed friend before your dinner meeting? xoxo

Sure enough, I heard from JAG Man promptly after he finished at work, and he was over before I had time to change out of my fleece sweatshirt and yoga pants.

We chose to test out a product called, "Sex Bomb." The bomb is aesthetically-pleasing in and out of the water with its fuchsia color and purple accents. He commented that the smell of jasmine and ylang-ylang filled the bathroom when I took the bomb out of the box -- even before I dropped it in the water.

(For those of you who haven't used one of Lush's bath bombs before, the bomb is about the size of a tennis ball. Depending on how large your bath tub is and how long you will be bathing for, you can use 1/3, 1/2 or the whole bomb in the tub. Drop the bomb inside of the bath and watch it fizz in the water. The scents and oils inside the product will fill the water and the shower stall.)

Unlike traditional bubble baths, the aroma of the Sex Bomb doesn't fade after a few minutes. The bombs are thus perfect for a longer bathing experience. Lush's use of high-quality ingredients also softens your skin. When I got out of the tub, I didn't put any lotion on before bed. In the morning, my skin wasn't dry in the slightest.

The product does what it's supposed to, but didn't necessarily live up to its name. Sex in the bath tub (as opposed to sex in the shower) is difficult to maneuver unless your tub has been featured in MTV's Cribs or you and your partner are just having sex for a few minutes before continuing outside of the bath. If I worked for Lush, I would name this product, "Intimacy Bomb," since the closeness of being naked in a tub together is definitely romantic and intimate.

How did we fit both of our bodies in a standard tub? He got in the tub first with his back against the far wall. I got in next, positioning myself between his legs. I leaned my head back on his chest, and we napped for a few minutes. Then, I flipped over so we were facing each other. In that position, we could easily kiss and caress each other.

I then proceeded to bathe him with Lush's Flying Fox Shower Gel. The gel contains jasmine and ylang-ylang like the Sex Bomb so the products work well together. I recommend the Sex Bomb for a romantic evening, but not necessarily for sex.

I can see why Lush included a Sex Bomb in the True Romance box, but I'd prefer to use it again when I'm by myself. The Flying Fox Shower Gel contains the same alluring scents as the Sex Bomb, but it's much more likely that I'll be having sex in the shower with the gel than in the tub with the bomb.

Have you tried Lush's bath bombs? What are your thoughts on the products for use by yourself or with your partner?

Great point, Rachel! Even thought Lush uses natural ingredients, I'm sure there are women who could get irritation or an infection from the oils. Thanks!

I would be concerned about having sex while using the bath bomb because the chemicals in the bomb could cause an infection when pushed into places where they probably don't belong.

Glad you liked it! I tried several of their shower bombs, and they just didn't make the cut. They were gone in about a minute, and they didn't have any real staying power as far as their smells went (one smelled like Lemon Pledge--blech!).

Somewhat Delightful

May 9, 2010

The little guy had served me well.

We had spent many a magical night together, but I had started to get bored with our old routine.

It was time for a change, a new beginning.

I was ready to say goodbye...

To my Rabbit.

It was time to purchase a top-of-the-line sex toy.

I wanted a toy that would provide great G-Spot stimulation, but was a better quality product than the Rabbit. I was torn between Lelo's Iris and Fun Factory's Delight.

The women at Dascha/Lotus Blooms recommend both brands because of the caliber of their products. I chose Fun Factory's Delight since that toy also provides clitoral stimulation. The Delight is made from 100% Medical Grade silicone so it's good for your skin and your body. (Phthalate-free is the only way to be!)

The Delight comes in a carrying case with an external charger. There are no batteries required, which is a huge plus! The case is so discreet that you'd expect to find a pair of sunglasses inside.

The Delight is available in black and white or pink. I chose pink since it seemed feminine. I also felt like the shape in black and white reminded me of a small whale, which just isn't sexy to me.

The toy is S-shaped so that you can easily insert it so it hits the G-Spot just so. It was made with ergonomics in mind so can grip the toy with your index finger and thumb. You then move your thumb on the top of the toy to operate the controls.

There is a positive sign and a negative sign where your thumb rests, and the control panel illuminates when touched. You may need to touch the positive sign up to four times in a row before the toy turns on. (For those of us who expect instant gratification, it helps to know that in advance to avoid getting frustrated. When I first used the toy and couldn't figure out how to turn it on, I was cursing at it for a few seconds. That's never fun!)

The Delight has eight (8) speeds. Press the positive sign to increase the intensity and the negative sign to decrease. Once the toy has been on for a few minutes, you can then continue to press the positive sign to change from constant vibrations to varying speeds.

It's most comfortable to use the toy if you are lying on your back or on sitting on a couch with your head and back upright and your legs out in front of you. Feel free to experiment on your own, but it was awkward to use the toy face down.

This toy features an added piece of silicone for clitoral stimulation. However, one size does not fit all! I had a hard time positioning the toy on my G-Spot and my clit simultaneously. I wondered if that was just how my body is shaped, but a friend who owns the Delight had the exact same problem. The product can give amazing G-Spot orgasms and is sleeker than most adult toys. But, I wouldn't pitch the Delight as dual-purpose since the clitoral stimulation is minimal at best.

The toy is very quiet and doesn't look like your typical, dildo-shaped vibrator. (That's a plus for those of you who don't want to wake up roommates, kids, parents or significant others.) The Delight is also aesthetically-pleasing and wouldn't be intimidating to pull into the bedroom for use with your partner.

There is one big negative to the product, though, and that's the price! The Delight costs a WHOPPING $129 or more, depending on the vendor. (The women at Dascha caution against purchasing toys at a significantly-reduced rate, noting that they might be refurbished or knock-offs. Amazon also warns against this, too.)

The Delight was the first toy that I paid more than three figures for so my expectations were higher. I wanted more bang since I shelled out so many bucks. And, I have to say that the Delight came up short. Fun Factory's Delight is a great toy for finding your G-Spot, but the toy has gathered a lot more dust than... ;).

Have you tried the Delight or a similar high-end sex toy? What was your experience?

Comments (2)

I still love the plug in models ;). And, yes, you said it. If the product is great, then the price is worth. But, so-so for $129 is so...no! xoxo

Great review! My first vibrator plugged into the wall! Love the no batteries idea SO MUCH, and the quietness. Too bad it couldn't hit all the spots at once... thats a must.

And about price... that price doesn't seem bad for something that works brilliantly... but if it doesn't it seems ridiculously high.

xoxo love love xoxo

Kinda cute.

July 12, 2010

I was excited to learn that Lotus Blooms carries Bswish sex toys. Bswish boasts products that are chic, functional and attractive. Think pretty packaging, sleek designs and hot colors. More importantly, Bswish toys are also:

1. Body-friendly. I can't tell you whether the use of toxic ingredients like phthalates in sex toys will cause you health problems down the road. I can only tell you that I don't care to take any chances when it comes to my health, and I'm not reviewing any products from hereon forward that might hurt my body or your body. Lotus Blooms is committed to only selling products that are made from safe, healthy ingredients. I take comfort in that fact and hope that you do, too;

2. Waterproof. You never know when you want to take your toy into the shower or bath with you, right? It helps to be versatile, and you can get all but two Bswish products wet; and

3. Affordable. The company's products range in price from $25 to $80. It's great to find a company with body-friendly products that are also budget-friendly!

I decided to try one of Lotus Bloom's bestsellers – the Bswish Bcute. There are two Bcute products: the Classic;

And the Curve.

Both toys are silicone, waterproof and 3" in length. The Classic is straight and slightly narrower at the tip. The Curve, as one might guess by the name, has a pronounced curve at the end that's designed to reach your G-Spot. Both the Classic and the Curve take one (1) AA battery and are multi-speed. And, both Bcutes are very economical at only $25 per toy!

I chose the Bcute Curve since I'm never averse to some G-Spot stimulation. When I brought the package home and took the toy out, I liked the way that it felt. Some silicone products can be too hard, but the Bcute Curve is fairly soft to the touch. I placed the battery inside with the ‘-‘ side toward the opening of the toy and turned it on.
In the good column, the toy is incredibly quiet. That's a huge plus for those of us who don't want everyone and their mother knowing what's going on in our bedroom or bathroom.

In the bad column, the toy is weak. I wondered how much power one AA battery could provide, and the answer is: not much at all. As I turned the toy from low to high speed, it shut off. I tried it again before using it and encountered the same problem.

Sometimes, I could twist the bottom of the toy and it would stay on, operating as intended. But, that wasn't always the case. On numerous occasions, the Bcute would be working fine, and then the vibrations would just stop. If I held the tip of the toy the entire time, the toy would stay on more consistently...before it turned off. A vibrating sex toy needs to vibrate so I found this problem to be seriously annoying. (Talking dirty and using curse words in bed with a partner can be hot. Cursing at a sex toy when you're in bed alone is not hot!)

When I used the toy, I found it to be less than stellar. Aside from the "why won't this thing stay on?" issue, the Bcute simply wasn't strong enough for me. Clitoral orgasm? Nope. G-Spot orgasm? Nope. My G-Spot was definitely more pronounced after having this toy on or inside me for 30(!) minutes, but I still didn't cum.
Frustrated, I put the Bcute down and finished myself off with my Fun Factory Delight.

The second time I used the toy was with a partner. He had never used a toy on his perineum -- the sensitive spot between the base of the balls and the top of the anus -- or the edge of his asshole. I applied a generous amount of Sliquid Organics water-based lubricant to the toy. (Since the Bcute is silicone, it's recommended to use a lubricant that's not silicone-based.)

Next, I placed the toy gently on his perineum and on the rim of his ass. I had to hold onto the toy tightly so that I could easily turn it back on when it mysteriously stopped vibrating. I also kept a strong grip on the Bcute since it's not designed for anal use. (If the bottom of a toy isn't larger than the top of the toy, it's not advised to use the toy in your anus. If you care to try, make sure you hold on tightly so that it doesn't slip and get lost inside you!)

My partner loved the Bcute Curve and its subtle vibrations. He didn't have a problem with the product's lack of power or the fact that the toy's vibrations weren't consistent. That got me thinking...

The Bcute is clearly not a product for an experienced toy user, but for whom might it be a good choice?

1. A first-timer toy user. This toy doesn't look, sound or feel intimidating. It's inexpensive, waterproof, versatile and body-friendly. And, from what I witnessed, the first time can be a charm with this toy!

2. A couple bringing a toy into the bedroom for the first time. The toy is quiet and small with a pleasing shape. It's not threatening in the slightest, and the Bcute has the potential to enhance sex. Place the Curve on your woman's G-Spot or on the edge of her anus during oral. Use the Curve or Classic to enhance rimming or a blow job. Or, try the Classic in different spots on your partner during sex. The toy might not make an avid toy user cum, but it still has the ability to increase the sensations during oral, anal and vaginal sex.

3. A woman with vaginal pain issues. If you have pain during intercourse, please see a health care professional who specializes in treating women with vaginal pain. (It is NOT all in your head or just something that you need to tolerate.) If your doctor recommends using a dilator or small toy to stretch the vaginal muscles, the Bcute Classic – with or without vibrations -- might be a good first or second toy for that.

So, how many squeals does the Bcute Curve get from me?

For personal use, I'd give this product the dreaded 1 Squeal. But, based on my partner's take on the Bcute Curve, a novice toy user would rank it at a solid 3 Squeals. I'll average the two for 2 Squeals, but I'm never using this toy on my body again. Sorry, Bcute. xoxo

City Girl's Squeals of Approval Chart:

1 Squeal: Bad. This toy is not worth your money. Do not pass go! Do not pay $2, let alone $200.
2 Squeals: Slightly Sub-Par. You won't hate this toy, but you won't necessarily like it either.
3 Squeals: Average/Good. This toy might not be the most innovative or satisfying, but it serves its purpose.
4 Squeals: Very good. A strong sex toy with minimal negatives that will be part of your regular line-up.
5 Squeals: Great. No toy does it better!

Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received the Bcute free of charge in exchange for my honest assessment of the product.

Lol and thanks, Twin! And, yes, 1AA battery won't do anything for me! xoxo

One of the things I love about Louts Blooms is that they care more about education than sales. I wondered how the owners would feel since my first review was far from glowing. They said that they wanted me to be honest and would be forwarding my review to the distributor.

Is there a way I could send you a care package without you paying duty and then you could send me a traveler's check? Just thinking out loud...

Oh, and two of my friends have small, lipstick-sized vibrators that turn off from overuse ;). xoxo

I was gonna say. 1-AA battery?! Even my 2yo's toys require at least 2-AA's.

Love your honest reviews. U, F & C, Hot Stuff!

I'm glad that you are not opposed to providing honest reviews, since you're working with this boutique. Do they happen to ship to Canada? I wouldn't be overly eager to order from the US anyway, paying duty at the border is a biotch.

I have a toy that turns off all the time too. It never used to. I think it's been over-used :) lol

The Elite Elise

July 18, 2010

When it comes to sex toys, Lelo products are the creme de la creme! The Swedish company was established in 2003 with one key objective: to create sex toys of better quality, function, and design than any others on the market. After trying out the Lelo Elise for the past two weeks, I say: Mission Accomplished!

Lotus Blooms is a certified LELO dealer in the DC metropolitan area. The Elise is Lelo's biggest toy, and at first glance, it's a bit intimidating. However, upon closer inspection, only 5" of this sleek 8" toy is insertable, and the width is a reasonable 1 ¼".

What's great about the Elise?

1. No batteries required! As is the norm for Lelo products, the Elise is rechargeable. A two-hour charge guarantees you four-hours of fun;

2. It's made of silky smooth, FDA-approved, body friendly silicone. (Just don't use silicone lubricant with the Elise or else it might get tacky in texture.);

3. There are two pleasure points in the vibrator. One is at the top of the toy, and the other is toward the base. There are also five levels of intensity and five speeds (consistent vibrations, just the tip, just the base, a pulsating vibration, and a whirring vibration). This toy has a lot of options so you can adjust based on your own needs and preferences;

4. This toy is very quiet, even at its highest vibrations. You won't have to worry about anyone knowing what you are up to;

5. It's intense. Correction, very intense. Whether on your clit or inside for G-Spot stimulation, the Elise will have you orgasming every single time. There's a reason why this is Lelo's premier product;

6. It's perfect for travel. The Hitachi Magic Wand is many women's favorite toy, but a plug-in product is not convenient to pack and might not work overseas. The Elise is almost as powerful and much more discrete and versatile. You can fully charge it before your trip and put the toy in lock mode so there's no need to worry about your luggage vibrating; and

7. The Elise also works with your partner. Want a toy to help finish the job after sex or to help increase the sensations during oral sex? Care to bring something out for a mutual masturbation session? This toy can do all that and more! It's very effective, quiet and easy to pull out and just use (no batteries, cords or attachments involved).

Can you use this toy anally?

The Elise isn't designed for anal use. Nonetheless, this toy is very popular with male customers at Lotus Blooms. Guys and girls, if you are trying the Elise in your ass, please keep a strong grip on the base of the toy so that it doesn't get lost inside you! Or, ask your partner to lend a hand ;).

As an anal toy, the Elise provides a very fulfilling experience, given its size and intensity. Since this toy is large and powerful, start at the lowest, constant vibration to make sure that you don't lose your grip or overwhelm yourself.

What didn't I love about the Elise?

1. I found the controls to be confusing. How confusing? I had to break out the instruction manual to actually figure out what the buttons meant.

The circle on the bottom of the Elise has four markings. If you're not a fan of instruction manuals, the + sign at 3 o'clock on the circle turns the vibrator on. You can press the + sign four times to keep increasing the intensity of the vibrations. To decrease the intensity of the vibrations, press the – sign at the 9 o'clock spot. To vary the consistency of the vibrations or how much of the toy is pulsating, press the upward arrow at the 12 o'clock position. The negative arrow at the 6 o'clock position decreases the changes in vibrations, and a firm press in the center of the circle turns the vibrator off; and

2. The Elise could also be called the Elite, given its hefty price tag of $169. I appreciate that's quite a chunk of change, but this is a top of the line, multi-functional toy. If you have the money to spare, I'm sure you'll find this product to be a worthwhile investment!

I've tried a lot of sex toys over the past six months. Many of them get used a few times before they end up buried in the bottom of my toy drawer. That hasn't been the case with the Lelo Elise. It's become a regular part of my bedroom routine by myself and with my partner.

If you're a newbie to a toy of this length or intensity, start on the lowest vibration and work your way up. If you're a toy aficionado, you'll appreciate the Elise's size, versatility and intensity.

How many squeals does this toy warrant? I'd give it a full Five (5) Squeals for clitoral and G-Spot stimulation for both beginners and experienced toy users. But, for anal use and price, I would give Three (3) Squeals. I'll average it out for a four (4) Squeal ranking, but picture those four squeals as very solid and very loud! Xoxo

In accordance with FTC Guidelines, I received the Lelo Elise free of charge in exchange for my honest assessment of the product.

Not your Grandpa's flashlight!

July 26, 2010

A couple was expecting twins. The husband wanted sex, but the wife felt too uncomfortable for any bedroom activities. Frustrated, the husband went into his garage for some privacy. His eyes gazed across his wall of tools and stopped on a large flashlight. He had an idea – some masturbation inspiration, if you will – and the Fleshlight was born!

With more than three million Fleshlights sold, this is the best-selling masturbatory toy for men on the market! The photo doesn't do the product justice. I imagined that it would be comparable in size to a small flashlight, but this toy is large like an industrial-sized flashlight. The case is hard, black plastic, and the product resembles a tool that you would find in a man's garage. The soft sleeve inside is 10" long and 4" wide.

The top of the original Fleshlight is designed to look and feel like a woman's pussy, but there are also models to replicate an ass or a mouth. The sleeves are available in pink or mocha. For those of you who fear that someone might open the case, there's a stealth version that looks the most like a real flashlight. If you prefer an extra tight sleeve or more intense, ribbed sensations, then you can order one of textured models. For men who enjoy the visual of watching themselves masturbate or are dating women who like that, there's a clear model.

Now, I'm like a guy when it comes to reading – or rather, not reading – instructions, but be sure to read the pamphlet that comes with your Fleshlight before using it. You'll need to soak the sleeve in water before you use it and follow the directions for cleaning the product afterward to ensure that your Fleshlight lasts for a long time!

You also should have some water-based lubricant handy, and it's recommended to use cornstarch on the product after cleaning. Do NOT use silicone-based lubricant, talc or baby powder on or in the Fleshlight!

I broke out the pink pussy model with the original sleeve texture for my man. The top of the toy really looks like a pussy with thin lips and a clitoris. The feel is soft to the touch and just a bit sticky. (For those of you who have read my post about toxic ingredients like phthalates in sex toys, you can exhale because the Fleshlight is phthalate-free.) The top of the sleeve is substantial enough to feel durable, but the material has give to it.

For my man's first experience with a gentleman's product, I happened to be in bed with him. He took off the top of the case and applied water-based lubricant to the inside of the sleeve and his cock. He then laid down on the bed, spread his legs slightly, placed his cock inside of the Fleshlight, and moved it up and down. I focused on kissing him, massaging his balls and using the Lelo Mia on the tip of his anus, while he masturbated.

The Fleshlight provides a lot of suction, and there's a subtle whistling noise from the product going up and down the cock. The cap on the base on the toy can be adjusted to make the suction tighter or looser, depending on your preference. If you like vibrations, you can stick a small bullet or vibrator up the sleeve through the base of the toy. The Fleshlight can also be used to help a guy build up his stamina in the bedroom.

My man used the toy for about 20 minutes before we had sex. When we were finished, I asked for his thoughts about the Fleshlight:

At first, it was weird. Then it was good. And, then it was weird again.

Me: Does it feel like a pussy?

Man: Of course not.

It crossed my mind that he might have found it a weird experience to use the toy with me in the room. He wasn't self-conscious, but he also knew that the Fleshlight was for foreplay, rather than for getting off. If he had been alone, I'm betting that he would have enjoyed the toy much more.

How does the Fleshlight fare?

City Girl's Squeals of Approval Chart:

1 Squeal: Bad. This toy is not worth your money. Do not pass go! Do not pay $2, let alone $200.
2 Squeals: Slightly Sub-Par. You won't hate this toy, but you won't necessarily like it either.
3 Squeals: Average/Good. This toy might not be the most innovative or satisfying, but it serves its purpose.
4 Squeals: Very Good. A strong sex toy with minimal negatives that will be part of your regular line-up.
5 Squeals: Great. No toy does it better!

For couple's use, we gave it 3 Squeals since it definitely was a nice variation to traditional foreplay. The Fleshlight kept my man's interest and kept his cock hard and excited with me lying naked next to him. (That says something!) My man has yet to try the Fleshlight for solo use, but I have to think that the product would garner at least one extra squeal out of him. Try it out and let me know what you guys think! The Fleshlight is available at the Lotus Blooms boutique located at 1017 King Street in Alexandria, Virginia. Mention "City Girl" for 10% off of all your purchases! If you're not local, call the store at 703-535-8225 or purchase online. xoxo

About a year ago, at the urging of a woman friend of mine, I bought a Fleshlight. She had told me she was thinking of buying one for her husband, and strongly recommended that I get one too. While I was curious to get a first-hand review from a friend, my eagerness and libido won out before they go theirs, and I ended up becoming the test penis :"

I went to the Fleshlight website, and, after checking out the various models, I opted for the Speed Bump sleeve with a black plastic case. The Speed Bump has multiple pleasure beads/nubs all along the sleeve for enhanced pleasure. The Fleshlight website ranks it a 4 out of 5 in terms of sensation level. Given the price tag, I wanted to get something with a little extra "oomph!" to get the job done. All total, it came to about $70, which I though was kind of pricey for a sex toy (particularly considering how my hand is free!). However, I read rave reviews about how it was the Rolls Royce of male toys, so I decided to splurge. I had recently broken up with my girlfriend at the time, and thought it would be a good idea to treat myself. I must say, however, that I was quite skeptical that this was going to be the be-all, end-all of self-pleasuring!

It came in the mail a few days later. I don't recall receiving the exact instructions in that CityGirl received—I want to say that warming it up with water was suggested, but not required, as was the use of cornstarch (while my memory could be shot, I'm virtually certain these were "recommended, not required" steps). As I bought mine a while back, it's possible they've adjusted their maintenance recommendations accordingly. Having had a rough day at work, I decided to pour myself a drink, undress, fire up an adult movie, and go to town with my new toy!

You definitely want to use a good deal of water-based lube with your Fleshlight. As I played with myself along to the movie, I poured a generous amount of lube onto my fingers and proceeded to thoroughly lubricate my surrogate pussy both around the opening as well as deeper into the shaft. I applied additional lube to my penis, paying particular attention to the head, to get it nice and ready for all those pleasure-inducing bumps :)

My cock slid easily into the Fleshlight. I have to admit, while it didn't feel bad, I wasn't blown away either, at least at first (the way people have made it sound, it's almost like you're supposed to bust a nut within the first minute). I continued to take my time, casually watching my porno, sipping on my drink, and exploring the range of my new toy. It felt good, but not great.

The most common way you'll probably use a Fleshlight is to grip it in your hand while making a continuous up and down jacking off motion like you do when you normally masturbate. As CityGirl notes, there's a screwtop at the other end of the Fleshlight that, when loosened or tightened, increases or decreases the suction you feel accordingly. I chose to vary things by increasing the suction until it felt like I was ready to come, and then decreased it, thereby prolonging my pleasure.

One thing I didn't like was that the sound being made while I was thrusting in and out of my Fleshlight made a fairly loud "thwick! thwick! thwick!" noise. It wasn't overly loud, but it sounded kind of weird.

As I continued to play with my Fleshlight, the sensations gradually grew more intense. I took the Fleshlight and slowly twisted it 360 degrees around my cock. The pleasure nubs started to make good on their promise, and eventually I felt that all-too-familiar tingling in the back of my balls signaling that playtime was about to be over :) As my climax drew near, the following things happened:

The good: it was definitely a toe-curling orgasm! I made a LOT of deep-throated squeals, moans, groans, bleats, and sighs of passion, much more than I ever did before. I was on my couch at the time, and I'm fairly certain the sheer joy of my climax caused me to kick one of the armrests reflexively! I'm positive I shouted out words that aren't in the English language!

The bad: when I'm with a woman or masturbating by hand, (this may be a little TMI, but bear with me), I like to continue to make light thrusts/strokes as I'm coming. While I can't say this is the case for all Fleshlight models, attempting to do so with the Speed Bump was a BIG mistake. OUCH! While my model wasn't super tight, when I attempted to stroke through my orgasm, the head of my cock hurt something fierce! Those pleasure nubs turned to torture nubs! This killed my initial enthusiasm for my new toy. Not fun! If you're a guy who likes to keep on going as you unload, this will probably disabuse you of that desire, very quickly :(

So overall, I didn't care for it, and here's why:

As discussed, I like to keep going while I'm coming. My Fleshlight had an issue with this. Much too painful. Perhaps smoother, less textured models might not be so bad, but for another $50 or so for a new sleeve, it's honestly not worth the money for me to find out..

And, well... frankly the Fleshlight is just too much work for masturbation! Let's face it: guys like to masturbate. And we like to do so for a variety of reasons. It's not just because we're horny. I've masturbated when I've been:

- Bored

- Restless

- Happy

- Nervous

- Sad

- Crying

And I know I'm not alone. Look, most guys don't need a reason to masturbate. And we're also fairly low maintenance. At the bare minimum, a hand is all we need, and we can control the pressure and the rhythm just the way we want to. Cleanup isn't much more than washing your hands.

What I'm not so succinctly getting at is that the Fleshlight is too much money for too much prep time and aftercare when all we want to do is enjoy a spontaneous orgasm! A lot of times, we don't plan to masturbate. We just *do*. Spending extra time prepping a $70 sex toy and having to spend time maintaining it after each use is honestly too much bother when I just want to get off. I know my own cock better than anyone, and while I can appreciate that a Fleshlight *climax* offered a whole new set of sensations, the overall experience just wasn't all that.

I got Lawyer Boy a pocket pussy for his weekend races, too - lol. I think if you enjoy the pocket pussy than the Flesh light will be a welcome upgrade!

Kevin Smith is all about it. lol.

Have not tried a fleshlight yet but the wife bought me one of those small pocket pussy "modeled after" tera patrick. That works great (especially as a solo) but I believe soon we'll probably upgrade.

I'm sure this really added nothing. ;)

Dolce Mia!

August 9, 2010

When it comes to sex toys, products by Lelo do not disappoint! I've written about the virtues of the Lelo Elise before, and now, I'd like to introduce you to the Lelo Mia.

The Elise is large and powerful, while the Mia is small and discreet. I usually associate size with intensity, but that's not the case here. Although the Mia is slightly larger than a lipstick, it packs quite the punch! This is the rare toy that can satisfy a newbie, an experienced toy user, and women with vaginal pain or other health issues.

Lotus Blooms recommends the Mia more than any other product for first-time toy users, women recouping from surgery, and women with vaginal pain disorders. Its tiny size makes it comfortable to insert, and the lowest vibrations won't overwhelm beginners or cause pain for those with health concerns.

One end of the toy is rounded, and the other end is flat. The flat side of the Mia is optimal for clitoral use or massaging the lips of your pussy. The rounded end is better for inserting into your pussy or anus.

The Mia has seven levels of intensity, and you can press the positive sign (+) to increase the power as needed. After the seventh press, you can continue to touch the positive sign up to four more times to change the levels of pulsations. The pulsations vary from constant to intermittent to whirring, making this a very versatile product! To decrease the intensity or vary the pulsations, just press the negative (-) sign. To turn the product off, press firmly between the positive and the negative sign and hold for several seconds.

On the strongest vibrations, the Mia is powerful! I use a lot of toys on a regular basis so smaller toys don't usually satisfy me. But, this one on the highest vibration did – several times, in fact ;)!

What are other pluses about the Mia?

As is the case with all Lelo products, it's made with all body-friendly materials.

It's rechargeable and discreet. You charge the Mia through your computer's USB port! (Yes, you read that correctly!) A two-hour charge provides over three hours of pleasure! You can pop the toy in the satin pouch that comes with the product and take it with you anywhere. The Mia doesn't look like a sex toy and anyone who happens to see it will just think you have the coolest flash drive around!

The Mia is very quiet, even on the strongest vibration. No one will know that you're using this toy, unless you want him or her to know!

This product is versatile, too. I used it on my partner during oral sex and when he tried the Fleshlight. Since the toy isn't designed for anal use, please be careful if you insert the toy into your own anus or that of your partner. Go slowly and use a tight grip to ensure that the toy doesn't get stuck inside. Once it's inserted properly, you can move it up and down or in a circular motion as foreplay or for a great anal orgasm!

Three tips about the Mia:

1. Don't use silicone lubricant on this toy since that will negatively affect the texture;
2. Don't use this toy in the water. It's not waterproof; and
3. Hold the toy tightly when you insert the rounded end inside since after regular use, the two pieces might occasionally separate.

How does the Lelo Mia rank on my City Girl Squeals Chart?

I have to give the Mia a full Five Squeals! For $64, Lelo designed a toy for everyone! Pick one up, and you'll be glad you did! Oh, and the best tip of this post:

If you head to Lotus Blooms and mention "City Girl," you'll get 10% off of all your purchases! xoxo

In accordance with FTC Guidelines, I received the Lelo Mia free of charge in exchange for my honest review of the product.

I really like the Mia! And, because it doesn't use batteries, even when the little piece slipped, the vibrations kept going. (Otherwise, I would have given it a lower rating.)

I am seriously amused by the fact this can plug into your computer.

I hate toys that don't have good grips on them though, especially if you're using lube. They always slip out of my hand just as I'm about to oo..oooo...oooohhh!!!

The Elise is a great toy! It's very powerful and much more portable than the HMW. I also like the Elise's versatility since it can be used for clit, g-spot and when handled properly, anus. The Mia would only be good if you aren't sure if your partner is open to bringing toys into the bedroom. Otherwise, the Mia won't surpass your love of the HMW!

i hold the hitachi magic wand as the standard by which all other vibrators are judged... :-) . that said..how do you think the Elise/Mia compare... cause they are much cuter/sexier than the HMW

The LayaSpot

August 17, 2010

Lotus Blooms' customers request that the boutique carry Fun Factory's LAYAspot more than any other massage toy! The toy was also featured on Oprah as a "must have" product in the Beginner's Guide to Erotica. Many online sources swear by the Laya Spot, but does the toy meet with my approval?

What's good about the Laya Spot?

It's a Fun Factory product! As I mentioned in my review of the fabulous Smart Balls Teneo Duo, Fun Factory is a German sex toy company known for its aesthetically pleasing and top performing products! If you purchase a Fun Factory toy, you can take comfort in the fact that the item is high quality, and free of toxic ingredients and allergens.

The Laya Spot is waterproof. You can bring this toy into the shower, bath or hot tub for added versatility. The product has seven different speeds and three different pulsations.

Press and hold the positive sign (+) in the middle of the toy to turn it on and increase as desired. After the seventh press of the positive sign, you can continue to press it to change from constant vibrations to varying, pulsating rhythms. To decrease the intensity or return to constant vibrations, press the negative sign (-). The toy takes only two (2) AAA batteries, and yet, it feels powerful in your hand.

The Laya Spot is made of silky smooth elastomer. It's soft to the touch and compatible with any kind of lubricant.

What didn't I like about the Laya Spot?

The shape. Fun Factory claims that the design is ergonomically friendly. I found it awkward and uncomfortable. The tip of the Laya Spot is bulbous and doesn't maximize sensations. I tried the toy on two separate occasions. It was difficult to hold if I was on my stomach – so much so that the bottom of the Laya Spot kept detaching, thereby turning the toy off. On my back, the product didn't rest on my clit comfortably. No matter how I positioned the toy, it wasn't pleasurable for more than a few minutes.

Its limitations. The Laya Spot is for external, clitoral use only. It's not meant for vaginal or anal use. There are toys that aren't designed for internal use, but still can be used with caution inside your pussy or anus. The Laya just isn't one of them. If your man enjoys light vibrations on his balls or perineum during oral sex or a hand job, then you can try using the Laya Spot in that capacity. Beyond that, though, you and your partner are out of luck.

Bad vibrations. In my hand, the toy felt powerful. But, on my clit, I remembered that the toy only holds two AAA batteries. Before testing out the Laya Spot for the second time, I purposely didn't masturbate for three days and left my strong toy in the drawer for a week. I had hoped that would help maximize my experience with the Laya Spot. However, despite my prior planning, the product did not deliver – even on its highest vibrations. (One reviewer claimed that the Laya Spot has 2/3 of the power of the Hitachi Magic Wand. I'm rolling my eyes at that statement!) Try though I did, it was impossible for me to orgasm from the Laya Spot.

Who might enjoy the Laya Spot? (Emphasis on "might.")

A first-time toy user or a couple bringing a toy into the bedroom for the first time or a person who only uses sex toys in the water.

The Laya Spot retails for $65.90. I just can't justify recommending that you spend that much for this product. There are other smaller massage toys that are more economical and versatile such as the Bcute Curve. There are also stellar products that can satisfy newbies, couples, long-time toy users and women with vaginal pain issues such as the Lelo Mia which I reviewed last week.

Personally, I'd give the Laya Spot One Squeal. If you're a sex toy beginner or water lover, then I'll go up to Two Squeals. But, imagine those squeals as very wimpy.

Buh baya, Laya! xoxo

* Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received the Laya Spot free of charge in exchange for my honest review of the product.

Kudos and Spankings

September 26, 2010

So, what do you think of my new digs?

I hope that you love the evolution from the basic WordPress blogging template to my own customized website.

For those of you interested in knowing how I went from there to here:

1.  Logo Design: I decided to crowdsource the design of a logo for my brand through Genius Rocket.

“What’s crowdsourcing?” you might be wondering.

Crowdsourcing is the act of outsourcing tasks to a large group of people.  Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Genius Rocket has assembled a community of more than 15,000 creative professionals from around the world.  An individual or company submits a request for graphic design, logo design, video, website design, flash ad or copywriting work, and Genius Rocket suggests a minimum for how the request should be priced.  (Since there’s no overhead, you’ll be saving a lot of money for comparable services acquired via a traditional corporate model.)

My request for a City Girl logo design to fit my brand garnered 137(!) submissions from Genius Rocket creators. I chose Patricia Adams’ fabulous leggy redhead as the winning entry!  Thanks to Genius Rocket for making logo design affordable for me and for bringing Patricia’s creative talents right to my virtual door!

2.  Web Design: Choosing a web designer was an even easier decision for me – no crowdsourcing required.  I went with Melanie Spring of Sisarina Inc.  Melanie had approached me with her ideas to take my blog to the next visual level, and she thought that crowdsourcing the logo to Genius Rocket would give me the most bang for my buck.  I also admired how Melanie and her staff tailor their website design, marketing and branding services to fit each individual client’s needs.  From a personal perspective, I like that Sisarina is a woman-owned business and active with nonprofits in the Metropolitan Washington Area, and that Melanie organizes free events for the DC Social Media and Twitter communities for the sole purpose of bringing people together off-line.

There are still a few final touches to the site that I’ll be updating in the coming weeks, but I’m beyond thrilled with how it looks!  I'm thankful to Genius Rocket, Patricia Adams and Sisarina Inc for making my vision a reality!

3.  Partners: With respect to my Partners, it’s worth noting that I’m only recommending adult toy companies to my friends and readers that are committed to using body-friendly products and educating their consumers.

The two nurses and sex educators who opened Lotus Blooms in Alexandria, Virginia, refuse to sell products that are not body-safe.  These nurses care far more about your health, safety and satisfaction than anything else!  You won’t have to worry about allergens or toxic ingredients in any of the toys that you see on their site or in their store.

Fascinations has 16 sex-positive stores in Colorado, Arizona and Oregon, and an online site at funlove.com.  I met Shanna Katz, the Coordinator of Sex Education for Fascinations while at the AASECT Conference, and was impressed by the company’s commitment to premier, body-friendly products.

While at the conference, I was approached by a very popular sex toy company who doesn’t regard the use of potentially toxic ingredients like phthalates in adult products as a problem.

“It’s not proven,” the representative claimed.

“Oh…because it was just proven in laboratory animals?” I asked, as he nodded in response.

These plasticizers have been banned in other industries and have been linked to infertility, liver damage, kidney damage and cancer.  After just finishing my first round of chemotherapy, I am disgusted that adult toys are unregulated because of the puritanitcal society in which we live.  Toys with potentially-harmful ingredients should have a warning label on them just like artificial sweetener, your hot coffee cup, or cigarettes.  Maybe the ingredients in sex toys won't cause cancer in your body or mine -- but shouldn't that be our conscious choice to make?

I vow not to buy or recommend products from any adult toy company that does not care to educate you about body-safe products.  And, as my friends and readers, I’m urging you to join me in this fight to self-regulate!

Since I mentioned two body-friendly sex toy companies, I also thought it worthwhile to mention two companies who aren’t as concerned about the possible link between phthalates and health problems:

Hey, Eden Fantasys, are you really asking us to believe that toys with jelly rubber material containing phthalates are cheaper just because of their “shorter shelf-life?”

So, Adam & Eve, do you really believe that jelly sex toys “provide an excellent balance between usability and cost?”

I fervently hope that no one ever uses a sex toy and ends up with subsequent health problems.  But, until the day when we all self-regulate, I’ll be doing my part to live up to my tagline:

Educate. Advocate. Titillate.

xoxo

I haven't been getting updates from your blog in my reader. In fact, the last post I have is from 9/21. Then today, I clicked on the comment you left me and realized that your blog has moved! So sorry I didn't realize!

LOVE the new layout!!! I also find it funny that Adam & Eve is guilty of some health and safety lapses--I remember they always tried to position themselves as being sex-positive and consumer-driven. Very interesting!

Keepin' It Wrapped

September 28, 2010

In an earlier post, I wrote about how to broach condom use without ruining the mood.  Now, let’s get to the nuts and bolts (pun intended) of shopping for condoms!

What should you consider when buying condoms?

A latex rubber condom provides protection against pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and STDs.  Choose latex, unless you have a rubber allergy.  A lubricated condom is often preferable to heighten the experience.  If you pick an unlubricated condom for a tighter fit and need to add your own lubricant over the condom, steer clear of oil-based liquids since oil weakens the effectiveness of condoms.

For those of you with latex allergies, there are polyurethane and animal skin condoms.  (No, lambskin condoms are not actually made with animal skin.)  Those types of condoms are thinner and allow for more warmth and sensation than latex condoms, but they do NOT prevent against HIV/AIDS and STDs.  As a result, it’s not recommended to use these condoms unless you’re in a monogamous relationship.

What condoms should you purchase?

If you’re making your first condom purchase, you might care to try a Variety Pack from Trojan to sample several different types.  For those of you who are able to visit Lotus Blooms or order condoms online, it’s worth picking up one of Lotus Blooms' bestsellers: RFSU and One.

RFSU condoms are made by the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education and are found throughout Europe.  RFSU is about more than just condoms, though, as the organization focuses on sex information, advocacy and education on an international scale.  RFSU’s condoms are made of soft and silky, yet durable, latex with silicone lubricant.  The condoms come in a rectangular package that’s about half the size of a traditional square condom.

Next, we broke out the Classic Select condom from One.  One products are manufactured by Global Protection Corporation, a company committed to outreach and making condom use socially accepted.  One condoms combine high-quality latex with innovative packaging (the wrappers are round, not square).  In addition, a portion of all of the company’s condom sales goes to HIV prevention and treatment in Africa.

The Classic Select condom provided a fit that was rather snug for my man.  Average-sized cocks should find the tight fit beneficial, but if you’re larger than average, choose One’s The Legend or Pleasure Dome brands.  (The former is larger in all regards, while the latter is larger around the top of the shaft.)

Despite the snug fit, the Classic Select is thin.  The condom is also purer and has been safely treated so it doesn’t contain any of that unpleasant latex odor.  My man enjoyed the experience, even commenting that he could feel how wet and warm my pussy was while wearing the condom.  I wasn’t as fond of the Classic Select, though, since I wasn’t able to orgasm without clitoral stimulation.

If it’s easier for you to purchase condoms at your local drugstore than online or at Lotus Blooms, I also recommend the Trojan Ecstasy.  I received samples of the Ultra-Ribbed Ecstasy at a conference for sex educators earlier this summer.  I loved the condom so much that I gave several to a friend.

What’s so great about the Ecstasy?  The amazing G-Spot stimulating ridges on the outside!  I have never cum so much with a condom and without clitoral stimulation than when my man has worn the Ecstasy.  The latex feels sheer and smooth in a way that’s not the norm for condoms.  The condom is also shaped with a rounder head (rather than the tapered tip) and tighter base.  Since it’s looser on the shaft, it provides a less constricting experience for the man.

I don’t feel right ranking condoms because I would hate for a reader to refuse to use a condom because of my review of a particular brand.  So, I’ll give out my Condom Superlatives instead.

Best for G-Spot Stimulation: The Trojan Ecstasy

Best for a Natural Fit: The Trojan Ecstasy

Best for Feeling Heat and Wetness: One Classic Select

Thinnest: RFSU’s Birds and Bees

Try one.  Try all.  Just be safe.

What's your favorite condom and why?

I love the condoms by "ooo" boutique. They use the same high quality latex as the One brand, come in super cute packing (their slogan is 'do it with style') and it's a very SHEER condom. My man thought it was superior in the heat/wetness category.

I definitely like the Trojan ecstasy the best and will not use any other condom since trying that one! WOW!

Cleaning -- It's A Must!

October 14, 2010

I’ve written a lot about sex toys, but I haven’t written much about caring for your sex toys. (And, by “caring,” I’m referring to cleaning.) Proper cleaning of your toys should be viewed as a necessity, not an option!

It’s recommended that you clean your toys before the first use and after each subsequent use.  Cleaning is essential for removing bacteria from the products and for prolonging their longevity. If the toy takes batteries, remove the batteries before cleaning and during storage.  For toys that you are using by yourself, you can clean them with: Hypoallergenic or mild soap and water; or a toy cleaner spray or wipes such as Mighty Tidy or Play Safe.

Mighty Tidy and Play Safe are designed specifically for cleaning adult toys of any material.  Mighty Tidy is a light cleanser that’s free of any harsh detergents.  It does contain a fragrance for those of you who like a light scent.  If you have a perfume allergy, you might want to choose Play Safe instead.  Play Safe is 100% natural and alcohol free, and also wards off certain bacterial infections.

If you are using toys with one or multiple partners, you MUST clean your toys thoroughly after every use with a strong cleaner. (In this case, “strong” doesn’t mean toxic, but rather, a product that is designed to protect against bacteria and infections, including HIV and Hepatitis B.)

A DC-area hospital recently had an outbreak of STD cases that were linked to sharing toys.  If you aren’t in a monogamous relationship with your partner and you are using toys together, make sure that you clean the toy between individual uses!  It’s worth breaking the mood for two minutes to clean the toy before you use it on yourself or your partner, especially as compared to the alternatives! A great cleaner for this purpose is Pjur Med Clean

This gentle spray lotion is alcohol and perfume free.  (I’m not a fan of anything in the bedroom that smells like fruit or the perfume counter at a mall so that’s a plus for me.)  Pjur Med is also dermatologist-tested and safe for use on your body.  And, most importantly, the cleaner is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral.  That means that Pjur Med is powerful enough to guard against STDs and HIV. Toy cleaners are available in sprays or wipes.

There seem to be more sprays on the market, but I prefer the wipes since there’s no need to get a tissue or towel to dry the toy off afterward. Pjur Med comes in both a spray bottle and wipes for $15.95. That price is higher than most of the other cleaners out there, but if you are using toys in a non-monogamous relationship, a few dollars more is a small price to pay for peace of mind!

It’s important to note that not all cleaners are intended for internal use or as a substitute for a personal wipe. Unless the cleaner explicitly states that it’s body-safe and intended for internal use, don’t use that product on anything other than your toys!

Remember to store your toys in a dry location. If the toy came in a box or with a travel satchel, you might want to keep the box or satchel for storage purposes. That will save you from having to clean your toys before each use to get rid of any dust.

If you’re in need of a personal cleanser for before or after sex, choose a product that’s free of any potential allergens like parabens.  If you have a perfume allergy or find alcohol-based products too harsh for your skin, look for wipes that are higher quality, fragrance-free and natural.

Lotus Blooms’ bestselling products in this arena are the discrete and disposable Pleasure Wipes and the Femme Fresh Wipes.  Pleasure Wipes are alcohol-free with a soft, clean scent and can be used before or after sex. For those of you who are in need of a wipe before sex, Femme Fresh Wipes will serve your purpose well. They also have the added benefit of root-based libido enhancers for a little extra oomph in the bedroom.

Pjur Med is a clear winner since it is highly effective as a toy and body cleaner. It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin, yet strong enough to protect against HIV. This product gets my full Five Squeals of Approval.  It might not be the norm to squeal about cleaners or safety, but pleasure shouldn’t trump hygiene and health!

Keep having fun, but don’t forget to clean those toys, too! xoxo

I would like to try them, however.. I seem to be allergic to EVERYTHING under the sun! NO LIE! I'm allergic to spermicide, I'm allergic to the latex in condoms (but not regular latex gloves..don't under stand that one..), allergic to most soaps other than caress, allergic to all detergents except dreft (the detergent for babies) and I'm even allergic to freakin' deodorant!! (But.. I still use it thank god!) I'm also allergic to all lubercants except astroglyde. I found out about all these the hard way (and someone very painful way). So, I'm very hesitant to try anything new. Are any of these hypo-allergenic?

I would steer away from the wipes since I think that those contain more perfumes and allergens. But, on the toy cleaner front, I would definitely get Pjur Med. It's alcohol and perfume free, dermatologist-tested and body safe. Or, you can just use the caress and water and not share your toys. xoxo

I used the Pleasure Wipes a few years ago, and I have to say I wasn't a fan of them. The smell was a bit overpowering, and whatever they used on the tissues was really wet, really gloppy, and eventually got really itchy :( The female half at the time agreed. Seems like they may have made some refinements to them, so I may have to give them another try. Great post, as always!

Required Reading

December 5, 2010

I was a bit surprised when one of the owners of Lotus Blooms gave me a book to review, rather than a product.  But, after reading Violet Blue’s The Smart Girl’s Guide to the G-Spot, I’m very glad that she did!  Sex educator and best-selling author Blue is an entertaining and effective writer.  Reading this book feels more like you’re talking to a close girlfriend than delving into a clinical sex guide.  It’s a fairly quick read, but it’s chock full of information!

At a time when there is much literature about whether the G-Spot truly exists, Blue states on page vii:

The G-spot is…a real, tangible thing, like my breast and your clitoris, and you can even see it.  But for some reason, lots of people seem to think that the G-spot is a myth.  Or a rumor…No – it’s a real thing, and it makes you come, hard, period.  No deep wisdom, soul-searching or goddess worship necessary.  But a little knowledge helps.

In imparting her knowledge to her readers, Blue looks at what the G-Spot is, what it isn’t, how it got its name, how to see it, and how to explore it with fingers, a fist, a toy and a partner.  The guide offers recommendations for toys and lube to harness the power of G-Spot and useful tips such as urinating before you begin G-Spot play.  The author also suggests positions for G-Spot pleasure during sex and devotes a whole chapter to how to tap into your ability to ejaculate or squirt.  The informative sections are interspersed with four pieces of erotica by Alison Tyler.  If you need to set the mood before having some quality time with yourself, these hot stories should do the trick!

This book is beneficial for first-timers, as well as those women who are already very familiar with their G-Spots.  (I fall into the latter group, and I’m happy to report that I learned several new things from this guide.)  As a testament to the book’s appeal, a girlfriend picked it up from my coffee table and plowed through two chapters while waiting for me to get ready.  The next time she was over, she asked where the book was so that she could read some more!

I love how Blue reminds her readers that it’s okay to listen to their bodies.  She encourages every woman to find her G-Spot, while acknowledging that some women prefer to orgasm clitorally or anally.  The author also addresses how some females don’t want to squirt or ejaculate.  It’s all about what feels good and right to each of us!

If I was teaching a course on The Female Orgasm, The Smart Girl’s Guide to the G-Spot would be required reading!  Turn off your laptop, your television and your phone for an hour or two and relax with this guide.  You won’t be disappointed, and for $14.95, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth!

I can’t give this book less than my full Five Squeals of Approval!

DD bought me this book with a g-spot toy when we were dating and I really liked it! Though the toy didn't work out for me (it hurt no matter what I did), the tips helped SO much when we did things together. Great read! =)

Intimacy In A Kit? Yes Please!

December 14, 2010

Looking to spice up your relationship without adding sex toys into the mix?

Want to bring some more romance into your bedroom routine?

Heading out-of-town with your significant other?

Then, the Tickle Me Intimacy LoveKit by Booty Parlor might be just what you need!

According to Booty Parlor, the LoveKit’s “playful, sexy bedroom accessories are designed to heighten the senses and make romantic date nights even sexier.”

The LoveKit is a small box of goodies that’s slightly larger than the palm of your hand.  The pretty packaging is discreet and unassuming, making it perfect for travel.  Inside the box, you’ll find four items: a feather duster; edible body shimmer; massage/bath oil; and lubricant.

Feather Duster: Since the LoveKit isn’t expensive ($30), I expected the feather duster to be made with cheap feathers.  Imagine my surprise when I found that the duster is soft and great for lightly tickling the skin.  It fits in the palm of your hand and can easily be used anywhere on your body.

The only negative to the product is that with every few strokes, a feather or two falls off the duster.  I don’t imagine that the feather duster will last beyond 10 uses so in that regard, you get what you pay for.

Body Shimmer: My favorite goodie in the LoveKit is the Dust Up Kissable Body Shimmer in Punch Drunk Pink.  I have a huge sweet tooth, and the powder tastes like delicious vanilla cake!  The shimmer is subtle in color and sparkle so you won’t feel like you’re bedazzled, and a more masculine partner won’t balk at playing along.  You can sprinkle the body shimmer on your skin by pouring it directly from the small jar, placing it on your finger and then rubbing it into your skin, or using the feather duster.  Then kiss and lick away!

Don’t Stop Massage Oil: This small tube of massage oil also doubles as a bath oil.  Booty Parlor claims that the oil is sexy and not overpowering, but I would describe the scent as girly and a bit strong.  The aroma is pleasant, but it reminds me of a product you would smell in a Bath & Body Works or Victoria’s Secret store.  That might work for some couples, but I didn’t find the smell to be sultry.  I also preferred the oil in the bath than for a massage.

With respect to the feel of the liquid, there are massage oils that are very greasy and sticky.  Don’t Stop is only mildly greasy and not sticky at all.

Add Magic Lubricant: This 10ml tube of water-based lubricant is unscented and versatile.  Use it with toys, for solo use, or for traditional or anal sex.  The lube isn’t too thick or greasy, which reduces clean up and works well with silicone toys and during traditional sex.  (Some may enjoy water-based lubricants during anal sex, but I recommend a thicker, silicone lube.  Pick up a few trial-sized lubricants or a variety pack at the Lotus Blooms store to see what works best for you and your partner.)

I like to take lubricant with me when I head out-of-town, and this bottle is great in terms of size and pump dispenser.  When you’ve finished using the Add Magic, it’s easy to refill the bottle with a lubricant of your choice.

The LoveKit may or may not make you or your partner squeal, but it is a winner for bringing some fun and intimacy into your life!  The LoveKit is perfect for a romantic getaway since the box is compact and easy to pack.  The goodies are also great for spicing things up in the bedroom and trying new products.  I can’t tell you whether or not the kit will lead to sex, but $30 is a small price to pay for four ways to increase romance.

The LoveKit gets a solid Three (3) Squeals, but picture those squeals more like sighs of contentment. xoxo

The Rabbit Habit

January 5, 2011

When the owners of Lotus Blooms handed me my next toy to review, I smiled like a kid in a candy store and exclaimed:

A phthalate-free Rabbit!

See, I had thrown out my old, jelly rubber Rabbit when I learned that it contained potentially harmful ingredients.  And, I’m a fan of products like the Rabbit that stimulate more than one area.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with rabbit-shaped toys, they consist of:

A phallic vibrator with two or more rows of rotating pearl beads that will hit your G-Spot just so; and

A separate tickler attached to the shaft with soft bunny ears to pleasure your clit.

There are many Rabbits out there, but Vibratex’s version of the Rabbit, known as the Rabbit Habit, is regarded as the gold standard.  For more than 20 years, Vibratex has manufactured high-quality, body-friendly toys.  Since the majority of women can only orgasm clitorally, the company’s products are designed to do just that, while also allowing for additional G-Spot stimulation.

The Rabbit Habit is made of smooth, safe elastomer.  The toy contains no phthalates or latex and can be used with either silicone or water-based lubricant.  The shaft portion of the product is 5” by 1.5”, which is substantial without being overwhelming.  Although the toy only takes 3 AA batteries, it still packs quite a powerful punch!  For those of you Sex and the City fans, it was Vibratex’s Rabbit Habit that was featured in the show.

When I try out a product like the Rabbit Habit that has separate controls for clitoral and G-Spot stimulation, I test out all the options: clitorally; G-Spot; and dual stimulation.  I started first with the clitoral section or the little bunny ears.  I liked how easy it was to control the toy with a simple flick of the finger up or down.

When I turned the Rabbit Habit on, I expected to lay back, relax and enjoy the ride.  But, that unfortunately didn’t happen.  All I could focus on was how loud the toy was.

How loud was it?   The product was so loud that I was worried that the noise would wake my neighbors up.  I had this vision of my building’s security guard knocking on my door, asking if I had a contractor in my unit after hours.  Yes, the Rabbit Habit is that loud!

Once I was able to collect myself and overlook the noise, I could focus on the benefits of the toy itself.  The bunny ears are definitely geared for clitoral pleasure, and the pearls inside the shaft are perfect for G-Spot stimulation.  This Rabbit Habit also allows you the freedom to get off just one way or both by just sliding one of the two controls on the battery pack.  And, at $90, the Rabbit Habit is moderately priced for a high-quality, dual-action toy.

I’m torn between Two and Three Squeals of Approval for this toy.  The Rabbit Habit gets Three Squeals because it’s a high-quality, body-friendly toy that will provide you with clitoral and G-Spot pleasure.  But, the noise definitely brought my level of enjoyment down a notch.

Oprah Magazine called the Rabbit Habit: The Rolls Royce of Sex Toys, but I have to disagree with that assessment.  If you want the Rolls Royce of toys, I recommend spending a little more for the Lelo Elise.  The Rabbit Habit is a habit that I could personally do without.  xoxo

*Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received the Rabbit Habit free of charge in exchange for my honest assessment of the product.

Omg, I cracked up when I read your description of how loud this toy was. No one wants their building manager or neighbor to think they are doing after hours renovations when really they are just trying to get off ;)

I'd really like to try a Rabbit-style dual action toy but, I'll probably pass on this one because of the noise and the battery requirement...instead I'll save up for something like the Lelo Soraya which I've heard is amazing. Hint, Hint, I'd love for you to review that one! xox

Art Class

January 26, 2011

When I think of body painting, I immediately think of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.  I always find the pages that feature the models with body paint on them to be among the sexiest and most artistic photographs in the issue.

I thus was excited when Fascinations at Fun Love sent me Kissable Bodypaint and a Paint Brush to review.  When they arrived in the mail, though, my enthusiasm waned a bit.  The tube is the size of a small moisturizer or eye cream, and the paint brush is so thin that I could use it to apply eye makeup.  I had to remind myself that size doesn’t matter…that much.

Fun Factory, the high-quality German toy company, manufactures the products.  I took comfort in the fact that the Body Paint had been tested by dermatologists.

The Body Paint is easy to apply, dries quickly, and is available in bright, luminous colors.  The paint is described as “kissable,” not “edible,” for a reason, though, so don’t view this product as a substitute for your dessert.  The Body Paint is for external use only.

I found the Body Paint to be an amusing bedroom accessory.  My man and I couldn’t help but smile as we drew on each other.  I’m not normally ticklish, but the feeling of the Paint Brush on my nipples and the nape of my neck definitely made me laugh.  After we were finished with our Art Class, we went into the shower.  The Body Paint came off easily, as we washed each other off before having sex.

For those of you creative types out there, I recommend purchasing several tubes of Body Paint in different colors so you can turn your partner’s body into a canvas!  If you’re just selecting one tube of body paint, pick a color that complements you and your partner’s skin tone.  (Trust me when I say that the bright red color of the Strawberry Body Paint wasn’t a good look for my very pale complexion.)  I suggest Vanilla Body Paint for darker skin tones and Chocolate for fairer.  I imagine that those flavors are also far more kissable than the overly-sweet Strawberry Body Paint.

For $16.99, the Body Paint is a solid pick for:

·      Young couples who are exploring their sexuality;

·      Couples looking to add more romance to their relationship; and

·      Couples trying to reconnect after surgery, child birth or illness.

I give Fun Factory's Kissable Body Paint Three Squeals of Approval.

Unless you’re an artist or extremely shy, I think you can skip the Paint Brush.  Just let your fingers do the drawing.  Isn't that more fun anyway ;)?

Spirit Fingers

March 5, 2011

If I look a bit bleary-eyed today, it’s because I spent much of last night watching porn from Fascinations at Fun Love. After three hours of Cheerleaders in one sitting, I almost became desensitized to high kicks and clit licks! I really took one for the team on this one, but thankfully, this two-DVD set from Digital Playground was worth it.

All puns aside, Cheerleaders will satisfy the adult entertainment needs of a straight male, heterosexual couple or bisexual female. The movie's stars are attractive from head to toe (and all those key parts in between), and you’ll appreciate how much attention was placed on lighting and camera angles. This is a big budget, quality film, and not just because it was shot in high definition with digital surround sound.

Unlike many adult movies, the story arcs in Cheerleaders actually work and set the stage without distracting from the scoring. The locker room banter leads to the cheerleaders' sexual flashbacks. There’s enough of a mix between each scene to keep it hot (from threesomes to orgies to one-on-one), but the scenes won't offend porn newbies. As naughty as these athletic supporters are, they aren’t going to risk getting kicked off the team for bondage, S&M or double penetration.

The big finish -- a nine-girl orgy -- won the Adult Video News (AVN) Award for Best All-Girl Group Sex Scene, but the earlier scenes with Memphis Monroe, Adrianna Lynn and Shawna Lenee are stronger. It’s worth noting that the cheerleaders’ tits seemed to be the only fake things in this film, and there's very little anal sex. For some laughs and juicy tidbits, make sure to check out the Behind the Scenes footage, too.

I’ll give this a hearty Four Squeals of Approval. I’m dinging a half of a squeal for the lead starlet, Playboy TV’s Jesse Jane. Her face and body are pure porn perfection, but her gratuitous moaning and frenetic bedroom style make me wonder if she needs to switch to decaf. Another ding for the fact that although Digital Playground made an effort to cast diversely, it would have been nice to have at least one black star in the film.

This DVD set is a great pick, whether it’s your first adult film purchase or you’re adding to your already extensive collection. The $49.99 price tag is reasonable since you’re getting 18 scenes on two DVDs. You may never need to buy another porn again, but for those of you who enjoy this cast and production quality, you might also want to pick up Babysitters and Nurses.

I know that I’ll be watching Cheerleaders again…just not all three hours in one sitting ;).

* Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received this product from Fascinations at Fun Love for free in exchange for my honest assessment.

Hmm, I wonder if there is an available copy here in Darwin. Nice review! :)

Great post City Girl! I've always thought your blog was the perfect vehicle to showcase adult video reviews to go along with your toy reviews and your sex advice!

A suggestion for a future article would be to talk about women and porn viewing. Granted, just like men, all women (and their tastes) are going to be a bit different, but an article discussing what women think about porn guys, features vs. vignettes, things that turn a woman on (and off!) about porn movies, etc. would be really interesting!

Great review--look forward to reading more of them :)

I commend you on actually being able to make it through 3+ hours of this & still be able to write a concise and informative review! ;)

I find that I can only watch porn for a very short time before I get desensitized and it all just starts looking like random moving body parts. I learned this after watching way too much guy/guy porn with my gay friends (a lot of the gay bars here used to play it on big screen TV's). It all starts to look the same after a while! LOL.

Interesting point, Lexa. I normally prefer movies that are rougher and less vanilla, but somehow this worked. I view it like a Hollywood blockbuster porn. I might prefer an indie or foreign flick, but I enjoy the big budget films on occasion, too.

The Icicles Cometh!

April 22, 2011

Enjoy it heated.

Admire the beautiful presentation.

Try it chilled.

Think of how long it took someone to make it.

Smile, knowing that you’re putting only healthy ingredients in your body.

And, when you’re done, place it in the dishwasher.

For a minute there, you might be wondering if you clicked on a food blog. But, fear not, dear readers. You’re in the right place.

I’m talking about a glass sex toy.

Pipedream’s Icicles No. 18 from Fascinations at Fun Love is a hand-blown massager made of durable and safe Pyrex glass. Hand-crafted glass products are free of phthalates, nonporous and hypoallergenic. Quality glass toys are tempered when they are made, and that process ensures that the glass is silky smooth and four to five times stronger than regular glass. (Translation: This product was crafted so that it won’t break if you drop it on a hard floor, but don’t start throwing it off of your balcony to test its durability.)

Glass toys like the Icicles No. 18 respond to temperature changes.

“What does that mean?” you might be wondering.

Well, you can use this toy heated or chilled by:

1. Running hot or cold water over it;

2. Heating it up in the microwave. (Since all microwaves and bodies are different, start with ten or fifteen seconds and test the result on your stomach. Continue heating the product up gradually to your desire temperature);

3. Placing the toy in the freezer before use. (Again, start with five or ten-minute intervals so the product isn’t too cold for your liking); and

4. Keeping a bowl of ice cubes, or hot or cold water on your night stand.

Glass vibrators also warm to your body temperature so as you get hotter with each stroke, the toy will get warmer, too. When you’re done enjoying the Icicles No. 18, you can clean it with toy cleaner and warm water, or place it in the dishwasher. When cared for properly, a glass toy is designed to last a lifetime.

Hand-blown glass is a great choice for those of you seeking a durable and body friendly sex toy. The Icicles line of toys is reasonably priced from $32-$70 with the Icicles No, 18 priced at $56.99. What in particular will win you over about the Icicles No. 18?

1. It’s beautiful. Most vibrators don’t win on aesthetics. The Icicles No. 18 looks like it belongs in a curio cabinet, not a toy drawer;

2. It can be used by men or women, as it was designed for g-spot, clitoral and anal stimulation. The size of the tip and the blue glass details around the shaft were not just placed there arbitrarily. The top of the toy hits the g-spot or prostate just so, while the blue nubs rest on your clitoris or anus;

3. It’s great for new and old toy users alike! The length and width provide a fulfilling experience without being overwhelming to novice toy users and couples. If you're a first-timer, make sure you remember to use a lot of lubricant before inserting the toy; and

4. For those of you who typically prefer vibrators over dildos, this toy will provide you with ample entertainment without any batteries required! The lack of vibrations is also an added benefit for those women who get desensitized by regular use of vibrators.

I’ll give the Icicles No. 18 my full Five Squeals of Approval. If you like glass toys, you’ll really love this one! And, if you haven’t tried one yet, what are you waiting for?

* Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received the Icicles No. 18 free of charge in exchange for my honest assessment of the product.

Just a couple of questions, Citygirl - how long does the toy maintain its either hot or cold temperature? Also, can you share how much it costs? Thanks - always enjoy your blog!

Thanks for your comment, David! The Icicles No. 18 retails for $56.99. With respect to retaining temperature, freezing the product would keep it chilled for longer. I found microwaving the product to be too hot initially so I preferred to rinse it in warm water. By the time it started to cool off, the increase in body temperature warmed the toy up again :).

I had been disinterested in glass toys, but decided to try one since a few readers asked about them. I'm a total convert now. I promise, TG, that this toy is not painful, as long as you use proper lubrication. (I'll add a sentence about that - thanks to you.) xoxo

Words of wisdom: If this is a new type of toy for you be sure to check the heat before inserting (especially if it's not going into you!). I highly suggest touching your belly with it first, as opposed to your hand or orifice, since it's a good "in-between" for sensitivity. You probably don't realize how hot your tap water is when it's in the form of a solid object.

Sex toys for first timers

May 17, 2011

Shopping for your first sex toy can be a bit overwhelming. There are so many options that it’s tough to know where to start. Here are a few tips:

1. Choose body-friendly products that don’t contain any toxic ingredients or allergens. Be wary of jelly soft or jelly rubber toys, unless the package indicates that the toy is phthalate-free. Choose products that contain medical-grade ingredients or indicate that they're sex-positive or body friendly;

2. Look for products that are easy to operate and position to help make your first experience a good one; and

3. Find toys that are well constructed, but not exorbitantly priced. Bang for your buck is key!

What clitoral and anal toys are great picks for beginners?

Clitoral Toys: A product designed for external (clitoral) stimulation is a must-have for every woman!

The Lelo Mia is a sleek, lipstick-sized vibrator that wins on form and function! Lelo is the gold standard when it comes to high-quality sex toys, and the Mia is quiet, powerful, portable and rechargeable. It's also a favorite pick by sex educators for women who are post-partum or recuperating from illness or surgery. For those of you who would enjoy a slightly larger starter toy with more power, the Lelo Siri is a great bet!

For you Little Mamas or girly-girls out there who want a toy that doesn’t look out of place in your home, how about a Hello Kitty or Rub My Duckie massager? Both are discreet, quiet and effective. The Three-Speed Duckie is also waterproof and offers multi-speed vibrations.

If you’re game for a more intense experience, there is no substitute for the Hitachi Magic Wand! This massager is a very powerful and durable plug-in toy. Once you try it, you’ll be hooked! It’s a two-speed massager so start on the lower speed and work your way up.

Bullet and egg-shaped toys are popular for clitoral stimulation since they are small, inexpensive and easy to operate. Some bullets come with covered sheaths or in animal shapes, and some wireless models are compatible with cock rings. A favorite pick is the 10 Function Remote Bullet. It's wireless, great for singles or couples, and body-friendly. The ten speeds are able to entertain old and new toy users alike!

Anal Toys: Anal products can provide much pleasure for both men and women! If you’re using an anal toy for the first time, remember that smaller is better. Stick with a product designed for beginners until you become accustomed to anal play.

Butt plugs are a simple way to ease into anal fun. Look for silicone or latex products that are phthalate-free. Make sure that the base of the toy is larger than all parts of the toy itself so that it won't get stuck inside of you. Also remember to also have lubricant on hand, and don’t use silicone lube with silicone toys since that can make the texture tacky.

For non-vibrating plugs, the small silicone Pop Plug is a good bet. The Pop Plug is economical and unassuming in size. You can also check out the Basix four inch butt plug for the next step in anal play. This rubber toy is still slim enough for first timers and contains no phthalates or latex.

Vibrating butt plugs allow for increased anal stimulation with less effort! The Mini Vibro Tease is a sex-positive, multi-speed vibrating plug with the added advantage of being waterproof.

For men interested in prostate massage, I’ve heard great things about the Aneros MGX. Aneros was medically designed to provide maximum stimulation of the male G-Spot. This product is manageable enough for first-timers and was voted one of the best sex toys by Talk Sex’s Sue Johanson and Playgirl.

What was your first toy, and is it still something that you enjoy today?

I've NEVER found a vibrator or dildo that I liked. The last vibrator I got felt like it was made to double as a drill. Plus it was incredibly loud for such a small toy. I think I may just try your Lelo Mia.

Ooh - the drill effect isn't a good one, and I don't like loud toys either.

The Mia is great, or one of the multi-speed bullets. If you'd like a small toy with more space (as in, the amount of the toy that can actually fit over your clit and the surrounding areas), the Siri wins in that regard. Email me with your pick! xoxo

Perfect position indeed!

July 4, 2011

Looking to spice up your relationship?

Still in search of that seemingly elusive G-Spot*?

Tired of using your pillows for more than just sleep?

Finding yourself sore (and not in the good way) after sex in certain positions?

Feeling like your partner tilts your or her hips one too many times during love making?

Then, using my best Estelle voice from Friends, have I got a product for you!

The Perfect Position Mini Try Angle**

This wedge-shaped cushion is body friendly and durable. The no-slip cover is machine washable, and the cushion inside is foam and designed for the long haul and highest of impacts.

In a doggie style or rear entry position, the female*** can lean over the cushion so that the top part of the wedge is over her hips. She then can rest her upper body weight on the cushion with her head raised or on the bed or floor. The angle of the Mini Try Angle allows for:

1. Increased G-Spot stimulation;
2. A more intense experience for the male;
3. Less discomfort in holding a rear entry position for an extended period of time; and
4. Less stress on the female’s head, neck, back and shoulders.

The cushion can also be used for positions against the side of the bed or missionary to tilt the hips just so. View this product as a nice wake-up call for your G-Spot and be as creative as you like!

With its plain black cover, the Mini Try Angle doesn’t look like a sex cushion. Place it under your bed, behind your pillows or in your closet afterward, and the piece will blend in nicely. The product is stain-resistant, and you won’t have to worry about grabbing the right pillow or changing pillowcases after sex anymore!

If you’re purchasing this because it’s uncomfortable for you to hold certain positions for an extended period of time, you might prefer the larger Try Angle Sex Cushion. I would also recommend the larger product if you and/or your partner are taller or broader than the average person. The width and length of the Try Angle make it more comfortable for larger frames and fully resting your head.

Amazon is close to selling out of both of these products, which is always a promising sign. I like the prices at She Vibe, though, where the Mini Try Angle is $56.99 and the Try Angle is $90.99.

For the price of one nice dinner out, you and your partner can enjoy many satisfying nights in! I’ll give the Mini Try Angle a very solid three squeals of approval, although I’m betting that the larger Try Angle cushion would have received four squeals ;).

Have you tried any sex wedges? If so, what were your thoughts?

* If you need a laugh and have a few minutes to yourself, check out this hysterical video, “G-Spot,” by the ladies of Broad Comedy.

** Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received the Mini Try Angle free of charge in exchange for my honest assessment of the product.

*** I’m writing this from a female’s perspective, given that: 1) I’m a woman; 2) the product is advertised for women; and 3) 75% of my readers are female. But, I’m sure that this cushion can also enhance sex between two men.

Waving my magic body wand

August 2, 2011

I was excited when Fascinations at Fun Love asked me to test the XGEN Body Wand.

“How does product testing differ from sex toy reviewing?” you might be wondering.

Well, testing typically occurs when a product: 1) is in the research and development stage and not yet available for sale; or 2) has yet to be placed on the shelves of a particular store. Product testing is less about dollar signs and consumers and more for the manufacturer's and retailer's benefit.

Since Fascinations is now carrying the Body Wand, it seemed like the perfect time to share my write-up with you. For those of you who have read my reviews, you'll notice that my writing style is less narrative and more focused on the relevant facts:

Packaging:

• Clean and simple.
• Aesthetically pleasing.
• Accurate picture and description of the product and its features.
• Indicates that the product is made of “high quality” material. Since the wand is made of body safe polymer, the box should be updated to state that it’s phthalate free and body friendly.

Instructions:

• Con: There weren’t any instructions included. I assume that the product can’t be used in water, but it didn’t say that anywhere.
• Pro: The product is incredibly easy to use. It did take me a few seconds to figure out where to connect the charger, though.

Opening the box:

• The toy has a slight odor to it.
• Much like the packaging, the toy is aesthetically pleasing and simply designed. It shouldn’t intimidate a new toy user or straight male. I like that the company used two basic colors and didn’t try to make the product look phallic.

Charging:

• Love that the wand is rechargeable. I much prefer that to battery-operated or plug-in toys.
• Very easy to charge.
• When the battery is low, the vibrations don’t dwindle down gradually. The toy just dies. That surprised me, especially since it happened while I was using it.

Using the toy:

• Incredibly easy to use and hold. I love how simple the one finger control dial is.
• The company’s claim that the toy is “deceptively powerful” is correct. This toy is great for clitoral stimulation!
• I wish the head was a little more angled so that it was easier to use when lying on my stomach.
• The box states that the toy is “quiet.” I wouldn’t say this is a loud toy, but I don’t consider it particularly quiet either. Every time I used it, there was a high-pitched buzzing sound when I first turned it on.

• For a straight couple’s use: I like the fact that I can keep the wand on low vibrations and place it on my partner’s perineum. (Other products like the Hitachi Magic Wand were too powerful for his liking.)

• For those women who can get desensitized by toys with powerful vibrations, I appreciate the fact that you can achieve orgasms with this wand, but that it’s not as desensitizing as the Hitachi Magic Wand.

• For new toy users, the different settings should help ensure that the toy isn’t overpowering. I’ve read reviews of the Hitachi Magic Wand in which women have found the high setting to be too much for them. The Body Wand’s highest setting is strong enough for an experienced toy user without being overwhelming to a newbie.

Other advantages:

• Portable. This toy is small enough to pack, but powerful to use.
• Cord-free: The Hitachi Magic Wand or comparable products that you have to plug into an outlet can be cumbersome. This wand isn’t.

I would recommend this toy to a friend and will continue to use it.

Note: The XGEN Body Wand Rechargeable retails for $80.99. There’s a plug-in version for $18 less, but if you can afford to pay more than $50 for a toy, it’s worth the added investment for the rechargeable product. There’s much more versatility when you don’t have to worry about a cord and electrical outlet.

I haven’t given a toy my full Five Squeals of Approval in a while, but the XGEN Body Wand deserves it!
This toy is great for couples, singles, new toy users and experienced toy aficionados! A win-Wand-win!

* Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received this product free of charge in exchange for my honest input.

Ask (the Lelo) Siri

January 22, 2012

When I saw, “Ask Siri About Sex,” on my Twitter stream, I initially thought it was a typographical error. I was bothered that Suri was growing up so quickly. Her love of high heels is one thing, but publicly talking about sex?!?

I clicked on the link and laughed out loud, as I learned about the iPhone Siri. Once I realized that there was a new technology application called Siri, the attorney in me wondered what Lelo, the award-winning adult toy company, thought about it.

See, Lelo had come out with an incredibly powerful intimate massager named Siri in 2010 -- long before Apple introduced its own version of Siri. As Lelo describes in the company’s open letter to Apple:

Siri will become a term that defines the best of both worlds – Apple representing business and Lelo representing pleasure.

I finally got my hands on a Siri, and readers, you’ll be asking this toy for so much more than you’ll ask the Siri app.

Most small sex toys are designed for those who occasionally use sex toys and don’t require a lot of power and vibration. They’re made with cheap (and often potentially toxic) materials and don’t last very long. And, their shapes and colors don’t lend themselves to being brought into the bedroom with a partner.

"I want you so much, baby. Now let me go grab my lipstick vibrator. Or, do you want the dolphin or Hello Kitty this time?"

As a seasoned *cough* toy user and reviewer, I look for certain elements in an adult product:

Is it free of potentially toxic phthalates and body safe?

Could the toy work for both a woman battling illness or very sensitive to clitoral stimulation, as well as a woman who prefers very powerful vibrations?

Is the product quiet enough so that neighbors, roommates or family members won’t hear?

Would a woman be embarrassed if airport security, her mother or her child found it? (AKA Does it look like a sex toy?)

Can the product be used in the bedroom with your partner?

Will this toy last and not break after a dozen uses?

Lelo’s Siri fits the bill for all of these and more!

As with all Lelo products, Siri is body friendly and ergonomically friendly. Press the “+” sign to turn it on. Keep pressing that button to increase intensity. Press the “-“ sign to decrease vibrations or hold that button for several seconds to turn it off. The arrows can change the pulse or speed of the vibrations for different sensations.

On the lowest level, the product is perfect for those women who are hypersensitive or who are recovering from illness. On the highest level (six), the toy will satisfy the more discriminating consumer.

Siri is quiet, fits in the palm of your hand, and doesn’t look like a sex toy. It’s actually designed as a personal massager so it can work all over your body. Siri isn’t meant for internal use, though, so stick to external stimulation.

Use Siri on your clit, the outside of your pussy, your nipples or the outside of your anus. Try the Siri at different angles since you might prefer the side of the toy more or less than the large tip (where the color is).

The Siri can also be used with your partner. Hold it against your clit while you’re on top of your partner or he’s behind you. Place Siri on the bottom side of your man’s shaft or rub it against his perineum (the spot between his balls and anus) during a hand job or oral sex. Or, hold the toy on light vibrations against his balls while you’re having sex.

After a two-hour charge, you can use the toy for at least four hours. You won’t have to worry about the Siri dying just as you are revving up!

The Siri comes with a one-year warranty and retails for $99. I haven’t given a toy a full Five Squeals out of Five* in a while, but this one deserves it.

The only thing you need to ask is how soon can it be shipped to you!

Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received the Siri free of charge in exchange for my honest assessment of the product.

*City Girl's Squeals of Approval Chart:

One Squeal: Bad. This toy is not worth your money. Do not pass go! Do not pay $2, let alone $200.
Two Squeals: Slightly Sub-Par. You won't hate this toy, but you won't necessarily like it either.
Three Squeals: Average/Good. This toy might not be the most innovative or satisfying, but it serves its purpose.
Four Squeals: Very good. A strong sex toy with minimal negatives that will be part of your regular line-up.
Five Squeals: Great. No toy does it better!

Oh My Tor II!

March 1, 2012

When it comes to adult toys for couples, cock rings offer versatility and pleasure. The ring tightens around the man's shaft to allow for a prolonged erection and more intense orgasm. Accoutrements and vibrations on the ring provide mild to moderate clitoral, vaginal, scrotal or anal stimulation.

For those who haven’t tried cock rings before, there are nice products on the market designed for one-time use. You can enjoy 20 minutes of vibrations for around $12, which may be a wise option if you’re engaging in sex with multiple partners.

What if $12 for 20 minutes of vibrations doesn't cut it, though? What if you're looking for a cock ring to be a permanent fixture in your boudoir?

Enter the Lelo Tor II or the Crème de la Crème of Cock Rings!

Noteworthy features of the Tor II:

  • Waterproof for fun in the shower, bath or Jacuzzi.
  • Discreet. This toy is unassuming so it’s perfect for travel.
  • Rechargeable. A two-hour charge will provide you with a two-hour charge.
  • Multiple speeds that provide mild to moderate vibrations. It's an added bonus that the vibrations are very quiet.
  • Body-friendly silicone. This is a Lelo product so you don’t have to worry about the use of any potentially-toxic materials.
  • Highly recommended for heterosexual couples. Approximately 1/4 of women can orgasm from vaginal intercourse alone. The rest require clitoral stimulation and/or the use of a toy. The clit has thousands of nerve endings so the vibrations of the Tor II will be a welcome addition to a female's bedroom routine.

Just how enjoyable is the Tor II? A transcript of a recent evening with this product would read as follows:

Oh My God!
Ooh My God!!
Oooh My God!!!
Oooohh My God!!!!

This toy also might have played a pivotal role in me waking his neighbor up in the middle of the night. Allegedly.

At $119, the Tor II is a pricier product, but it will get the job done for years to come. Lelo even offers a 12-month warranty on the toy. To protect your investment, make sure you use water-based lubricant with the Tor II. (That will prevent the silicone from becoming tacky and a man from getting chaffed.)

A few minor criticisms about the Tor II:

  • Lelo claims that there are six powerful modes to this toy, but I only noticed four.
  • The streamlined design of the ring is aesthetically pleasing, but it can take a minute to turn the product on and off. That can be a bit uncomfortable for the man after he reaches orgasm.
  • If a man is very wide, the Tor II will likely be too constricting for him. The goal here is for the ring to be tight without being painful.

The significant pros to this toy far outweigh the small negatives, though. The Lelo Tor II is that rare couple's product that will never be in a drawer collecting dust. I thus give the Tor II a solid Four Squeals of Approval. (If I gave half squeals, I would do so here.) Those who get this toy won't regret it.

* Pursuant to FTC Guidelines, I received the Lelo Tor II from the manufacturer without compensation in exchange for my honest review of the product therein.
